Good agreement, ease of use might sway adoption of the digitally graded scale
FRIDAY, April 22, 2016 (HealthDay News) — There is moderately good agreement between the Sunnybrook Facial Grading System (FGS) and the eFACE digitally graded facial measurement scale in assessing patients with facial paralysis, according to a study published online April 21 in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.
Robert A. Gaudin, M.D., from Harvard Medical School in Boston, and colleagues retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 109 patients who were evaluated at a facial nerve center by physical therapists using the eFACE and the Sunnybrook FGS on the same day (from November 2014 through May 2015). Correlations between the functional predictions of the two scales were assessed.
The researchers observed a moderately strong correlation between eFACE and Sunnybrook FGS scores in both total and subcategory scores.
“Given the ease of using the eFACE on mobile devices, as well as its additional functionality, it may represent a reasonable facial grading option across disciplines in the future,” the authors write.
