Recommended immunization schedule presented, includes several changes from 2019 schedule
THURSDAY, Feb. 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) — Changes to the recommended immunization schedule for children and adolescents are presented in a report published in the Feb. 7 issue of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and a policy statement published online Feb. 4 in Pediatrics.
Candice L. Robinson, M.D., from the CDC in Atlanta, and colleagues present the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended immunization schedule for children and adolescents aged ≤18 years, which include several changes from the 2019 immunization schedule.
According to the authors, changes to the 2020 immunization schedule include new or updated recommendations for the hepatitis A vaccine, influenza vaccine, meningococcal B vaccine, and the tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis vaccine. In addition, the updated schedule includes clarification on the recommendations for the diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis vaccine, Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine, hepatitis B vaccine, meningococcal ACWY vaccine, and poliovirus vaccine. In a change to the cover page, the American College of Nurse-Midwives has been added to the list of organizations approving the immunization schedule.
In a policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the updated 2020 childhood and adolescent immunization schedule is further explored, including the recommended immunization schedule from birth to 18 years of age, the catch-up immunization schedule for those aged 4 months to 18 years who start late or are more than one month behind on vaccination, and vaccines that may be indicated based on medical conditions.
