Surgeries include forehead remodeling, rhinoplasty, mentoplasty, thyroid chondroplasty
FRIDAY, Feb. 5, 2016 (HealthDay News) — Patient satisfaction after facial feminization surgery is high, according to a study published in the February issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Mirco Raffaini, M.D., from the University of Florence in Italy, and colleagues analyzed surgical outcomes in 33 patients (aged 19 to 40 years) referred for facial feminization surgery (180 procedures) between January 2003 and December 2013. The surgery can include forehead remodeling, rhinoplasty, mentoplasty, thyroid chondroplasty, and voice alteration procedures. Outcomes were assessed through patient questionnaires and serial photographs.
The researchers found that, barring complications, most facial feminization surgery procedures can be safely completed in six months. All of the patients exhibited excellent cosmetic results and were satisfied with their procedures. A loss of masculine features was seen in both frontal and profile views.
“The reduction of gender dysphoria has psychological and social benefits and significantly affects patient outcome,” the authors write.
