New Interactive Module Aims to Clarify Professional Boundaries

Module focuses on potential boundary violations relating to treating family, colleagues, receiving gifts

THURSDAY, May 25, 2017 (HealthDay News) — A new interactive training module in medical ethics can help physicians to understand professional boundaries, according to a report published by the American Medical Association (AMA).

The new interactive module addresses ethical questions, and covers areas that leave physicians uncertain on how to act. The module focuses on potential boundary violations in treating yourself, family, and colleagues; relationships with patients outside of practice; and communication with patients with respect to politics, gifts, and discussions on social media.

The module evaluates relevant ethical guidance, presents ethical dilemmas, and then questions users on their response. The module provides follow-up answers and detailed explanations. The professional boundaries module is free to AMA members.

“The Code of Medical Ethics is a living document, updated periodically to address the changing conditions of medicine,” according to the report. “The new edition, adopted in June 2016, is the culmination of an eight-year project to comprehensively review, update, and reorganize guidance to ensure that the Code remains timely and easy to use for physicians in teaching and in practice.”
