Multiple Techniques Available for Sunken Superior Sulcus

By careful identification of the clinical features, treatment plan can be specified

THURSDAY, April 28, 2016 (HealthDay News) — Depending on clinical features, multiple techniques exist for correcting sunken superior sulcus, according to a review published online April 20 in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

Hyung Suk Moon, M.D., from Kyung Hee University in Seoul, South Korea, and colleagues conducted a systematic literature search to identify studies involving patients undergoing correction of sunken superior sulcus with various treatment options.

The researchers found 12 case studies (680 patients) to include. Five studies reported on augmentation of the deformity with surgery, while four used hyaluronic acid filler. One report of deformity correction involved microautologous fat grafting. Two reports highlighted the combined surgical approaches of ptosis correction with upper blepharoplasty and appropriate fat grafting. Complications (none severe) were seen in 49 patients (7.2 percent), with 4.3 percent requiring reoperation.

“By careful identification of the clinical features and proper classification of the types of sunken superior sulcus, the treatment plan can be specified,” the authors write.
