Free Training Being Offered for Substance Use Disorder Tx

Providers’ Clinical Support System offering training comprising online course, live training

WEDNESDAY, March 16, 2016 (HealthDay News) — Free training is being offered to physicians in medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which combines use of medication with counseling and other support for patients with substance use disorders, according to a report published by the American Medical Association.

In order to provide MAT for substance use disorders and prescribe buprenorphine, physicians need to have eight hours of certified training and to obtain a waiver.

The Providers’ Clinical Support System is now offering certified MAT training, which is completed in two parts: the first part includes 3.75 hours of online training on treatment, opioids, and use of buprenorphine in treatment of opioid use disorders; after successful completion of an examination, physicians obtain their waiver. The second part includes 4.25 hours of live training, which focuses on treating patients in office-based settings and clinical vignettes. Three free opportunities for this training are being provided in webinars in March and April.

“There are literally millions of people across the country who need our help, and they need it now,” Michael Botticelli, director of National Drug Control Policy, said in a statement. “We know that [MAT], when combined with counseling, is a proven path to recovery.”
