Educational Level, Age Linked to Eye Health Knowledge

Likelihood of being exposed to eye health information up with educational attainment, age, income

WEDNESDAY, July 5, 2017 (HealthDay News) — Education level, income, and mental health are among factors associated with eye disease knowledge and eye health information exposure among Hispanics/Latinos, according to a study published online June 29 in JAMA Ophthalmology.

Laura A. McClure, M.S.P.H., from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and colleagues conducted a cross-sectional ocular study involving 1,235 participants living in the Miami site of the Hispanic Community Study/Study of Latinos. The authors examined factors associated with more eye health knowledge and greater exposure to eye health information.

The researchers found that greater eye health knowledge was reported for participants with at least a high school degree or general educational development certificate (incidence rate ratios, 1.08 and 1.11, respectively), and for those with a higher mental health score on the Short Form 12-Item, version 2, Health Survey (incidence rate ratio, 1.03). The likelihood of being exposed to at least five sources of eye health information in the last 12 months was increased for those with educational attainment beyond a high school degree or a general educational development certification, those who were 60 years or older, and those with a household income of $20,001 to $40,000 or above $40,000 (incidence rate ratios, 1.29, 1.32, 1.23, and 1.25, respectively).

“These findings might be used to support the development of targeted interventions designed to improve eye health in this population,” the authors write.
