Increase in percentage of adults, children with private health insurance coverage from 2013 to 2015
FRIDAY, Feb. 12, 2016 (HealthDay News) — The percentage of uninsured persons is decreasing in the United States, according to a report published by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
Michael E. Martinez, M.P.H., from the NCHS in Atlanta, and colleagues estimated health insurance coverage for the civilian noninstitutionalized U.S. population for the first nine months of 2015 for 37 selected states, based on data from 79,847 persons.
The researchers observed a decrease in the number of uninsured persons from 2013; 28.8 million persons (9.1 percent) of all ages were uninsured in 2015, which was 7.2 million fewer than in 2014 (11.5 percent), and 16.0 million fewer than in 2013. The percentage of uninsured adults aged 18 to 64 years decreased from 16.3 percent in 2014 to 12.9 percent in 2015; there was a corresponding increase in private coverage, from 67.3 to 70.0 percent. The percentage of children aged younger than 18 years with private coverage increased from 52.6 percent in 2013 to 55.1 percent in 2015. The percentage of those aged younger than 65 years with private coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace or state-based exchanges increased from 2.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014 to 4.2 percent in the third quarter of 2015.
