Best Diet Rankings Revealed for More Than 40 Diet Plans

Best Diet Overall went to the Mediterranean Diet and the DASH Diet, with the Flexitarian Diet third

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 3, 2018 (HealthDay News) — More than 40 diet plans across nine categories have been ranked to help those dieting achieve healthier lifestyles. The results were published Jan. 3 in U.S. News & World Report.

An expert panel of nutritionists, dietary consultants, and physicians specializing in diabetes, heart health, and weight loss was convened to calculate the rankings. Each expert scored the diets in nine categories, including likelihood of losing significant weight in the short and long term and effectiveness against cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The Mediterranean Diet was ranked as a Best Diet Overall and was in the No. 1 spot together with the DASH Diet. The No. 3 place overall went to the Flexitarian Diet, which was followed by Weight Watchers, while the MIND Diet, the TLC Diet, and Volumetrics tied for the No. 5 spot. Weight Watchers had the No. 1 ranking for the Best Weight-Loss Diets, Fast Weight-Loss Diets, and Best Commercial Diets. The Keto Diet (tied for last on the Best Diet Overall list) and the Nutritarian Diet (tied for No. 15 for Best Diet Overall) were new diets included in the rankings.

“There is an established theme of what is considered healthy eating, but no single diet is the best for all of us,” expert panelist David Katz, M.D., from the Yale University Prevention Research Center in Derby, Conn., said in a statement. “Ultimately, a ‘best’ diet is one that can be adopted, managed, and sustained over time.”
