Six principles of success described for integrated leadership between hospitals, physicians
MONDAY, June 8, 2015 (HealthDay News) — New guidelines can enable successful physician hospital relationships and integrated leadership, according to a report published by the American Medical Association (AMA).
New guidelines have been released that can help physicians bring clinical skills and business insights together at the level of leadership in order to promote improved decision-making at hospitals and in the health care system.
Six principles are described for integrated leadership between hospitals and physicians. These include having physicians and hospital leaders who are united, sharing similar values and expectations, and with financial and non-financial incentives aligned. An interdisciplinary structure should be present that can support collaborative decision-making. At all levels of the health system, clinical physician and hospital leadership should be present, leading together. The partnership between clinical and hospital leadership positions should be built on trust, and work toward mutual achievement of the Triple Aim of better care, better health, and lower costs. Sharing of clinical and business information should be open and transparent. Finally, the clinical information system infrastructure should capture and report key clinical quality and efficiency performance data, ensuring it is useful.
“The new principles support having more physicians in the boardroom and in key roles at the executive level so hospitals can succeed in the reformed models for health care delivery and payment,” AMA President Robert M. Wah, M.D., said in a statement.
