Links Between Emotional Well-Being, Aesthetic Dermatology

Greater knowledge of aesthetic dermatology tied to better emotional well-being

FRIDAY, Aug. 25, 2017 (HealthDay News) — There is a positive relationship between attitude toward aesthetic dermatology treatments and emotional well-being, according to a study published online Aug. 18 in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

Maria Covadonga Martinez-Gonzalez, M.D., a dermatologist in private practice in Oviedo, Spain, and colleagues surveyed 770 Spanish adults using the Aesthetic Dermatology and Emotional Well-Being Scale.

The researchers observed a statistically significant relationship directly proportional between the degree of emotional well-being of people (self-esteem and assertiveness, optimism, and motivation) and the knowledge and attitude toward aesthetic dermatology. Some gender differences were found, with women having a lower level of emotional well-being than men, as well as a greater knowledge and more positive attitude toward aesthetic dermatology.

“People who are familiar with aesthetic dermatology and have a better attitude toward it, are also more self-confident, more optimistic, and more motivated; with emotional strength,” the authors write.
