Platelet-Rich Plasma + Hyaluronic Acid Improves Skin Rejuvenation

Beneficial effects on FACE-Q scores, biophysical measurements for net elasticity parameter

THURSDAY, Aug. 24, 2017 (HealthDay News) — Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combined with hyaluronic acid (HA) improves skin firmness and elasticity, according to a research letter published in the September issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Barbara Hersant, M.D., from the Henri Mondor Hospital in Paris, and colleagues conducted a prospective study to examine the clinical benefit of combining PRP and HA effectors. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, before injection, and at one, three, and six months after the last injection session. Thirty-one patients were recruited and included in the trial.

The researchers observed significant improvement at six months versus baseline in the validated subjective scale, the FACE-Q scores (44.3 ± 1.9 at baseline versus 52 ± 3.17 at six months; P = 0.03). Significant improvement was also seen from baseline in biophysical measurements for the net elasticity parameter (R5; P = 0.036). There were no reports of serious adverse events.

“The main limitations of this study were the lack of a comparison group and the difficulty of identifying the exact role of each factor (HA, PRP, and microneedling),” the authors write.
