Increases seen in liposuction, hair transplantation, breast augmentation, use of Botox, soft tissue fillers
FRIDAY, June 21, 2019 (HealthDay News) — More Americans age 55 years and older are undergoing cosmetic procedures, with a 2 percent increase in total cosmetic procedures from 2017 to 2018, according to a report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Researchers examined use of cosmetic procedures among those age 55 years and older and compared the use of cosmetic procedures in 2018 with that seen in 2017.
According to the report, there were 380,987 cosmetic surgical procedures performed among adults age 55 years and older in 2018, representing 23 percent of all cosmetic surgical procedures, and 3,835,438 cosmetic minimally invasive procedures, representing 27 percent of all cosmetic minimally invasive procedures. Overall, there was a 2 percent increase in total cosmetic procedures among adults aged 55 years and older from 2017 to 2018. Some of the top procedures included eyelid surgery (48 percent in those age 55 and older), face-lift (66 percent), and forehead lift (55 percent). Increases from 2017 to 2018 were seen in breast augmentation (4 percent), hair transplantation (18 percent), and liposuction (4 percent), as well as in the use of minimally invasive procedures such as botulinum toxin type A (3 percent), chemical peel (2 percent), and soft-tissue fillers (3 percent).
“I’ve definitely noticed more baby boomers making appointments to explore which procedures can help them look as young as they feel,” Anne Taylor, M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Columbus, Ohio, said in a statement.
